Sure, we could all speak using only digits all the time – 12 eggs, a cheeseburger with two meat patties, a group of four singers – but what would be the fun in that? It’s more fun to explore the different words for different numbers – from zilch to infinity -- and learn to use them!

so great
useful things. Thnx
Finally I know the difference beteewn a Nickel (5) and a Dime (10)! hehe
Thank you!
If "nickel" means "five", does the example sentence "He did a nickel in prison" signify that his punishment was to stay in prison for five years? Or did he roll a dice and the outcome was five? Or did he study the fifth grade of a school system? Or something else?
It's most likely that this would mean a five-year stay in prison, although this expression is rather rare. Other prison slang: "lifer' (assigned a life sentence); and "stool pigeon" (someone who informs on their fellow inmates). British slang: "detained at her majesty's pleasure (held in prison waiting to be tried and sentenced).
